Gordon Matthews, English native speaker translating from German or FrenchHello! My name is Gordon Matthews. I’m a native speaker of British English, but I live near Bonn in Germany. I’ve been working freelance as a translator (from German and French into English) for nearly 20 years. Until 2015 I was regularly copy-editing and proofreading for a small European NGO in Brussels, where I worked as office manager. As a proofreader I ensure that text is free of typographical and grammatical errors. As a copy-editor I ensure that English text is not only free of errors but is also clear and readable.

My specialist subject areas include economic development, environmental issues, politics, religion, theology, church history, spirituality, peace, conflict resolution, nonviolence, European affairs, and the conflict in Israel/Palestine.

My clients (for translation) include Brot für die Welt, the European peace church network Church and Peace, and EIRENE – International Christian Service for Peace. During recent years I have translated for a variety of organisations, including the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, and for individuals – a Master’s thesis, for example.

I have been fluent in German since undertaking a year of voluntary service in Austria at the age of 19. Before moving to Siegburg, a town near Bonn, in 2015, I had already lived in Germany from 1990 to 2001. I am also able to translate from French, having lived in Brussels for a total of two-and-a-half years (in 1987, 2012/13, and 2014/15). In 2015 I completed a professional course in copy-editing and proofreading.

You can read more about my recent work on the projects page.

Whether you need a page or two to be copy-edited or proofread or a whole book to be translated, please get in touch. I’ll be happy to discuss costs and time frames and give you a quote. As a freelance translator, I offer personal service, flexibility, and top quality translation at reasonable rates. I look forward to hearing from you.
